It is with much sadness that Old Alleynian Football Club is to inform its members of the passing of Robert (Joe) Alfred Crow on Monday 22 January 2018.

Joe was a Club Vice President and true OAFC stalwart, who dedicated himself to Club matters for much of his life. In his playing days, he was to be found on the wing for the B XV (4s) and XB XV (5s/Dev). On one memorable occasion, he was promoted to the XA XV (3s) when his opposition wing that day was an ex-Scottish international playing for St. Thomas Hospital – it would appear that the high quality of opposition spurred Joe on to his best performance, scoring his one and only try for the Club that game!

After his playing days, Joe remained staunchly involved with rugby and the OAs – he refereed as a London Society ref. in the lower leagues, was the Club’ Honorary Secretary from 1989 for most of a decade into the late 90’s, was the Club’s league registrar and disciplinary representative for many years and took over from Ron Branscombe in the 00’s as the 1st XV touch-judge.

Over the last few years, everyone at the Club will remember Joe coming to watch most if not all of the 1st XV’s home games and then propping up the bar and generously imparting his invaluable knowledge on the game, the Club and its history. Joe was an ever-present at the OAs and cared for the Club enormously – he will be sorely missed.

Details of his funeral will be circulated in due course.

Further to the sad news of the passing of Joe Crow last Monday 22 January, I write to confirm that the funeral will take place at the South London Crematorium, Streatham Vale at 2pm on Wednesday 21 February.

The wake will be held at the Alleyn’s Head.

All are welcome to pay their respects.

It is requested that donations be made to the British Heart Foundation instead of the laying of flowers.

Thank you,

Tim
Hon. Secretary
OAFC
