After a chastening home defeat at the hands of KCS, in which the team struggled to adjust to the style of play in London SW2, the jury was out on how the team would fare away from home in week 2 of the season. With the side containing three debutants, Rory Cardwell, Theo Dan and Tom Downie, the 1st XV travelled to Old Reigatians anxious to prove a point.

Despite conceding soon after the kick-off due to an imprecise exit, it is fair to say that the team proved their point beyond all reasonable doubt. As the referee's whistle sounded full-time on a 20-46 victory for the Old Alleynians, the jury of spectators basking in the autumn sunlight on the banks of the Old Reigatians' grounds, were satisfied so that they were sure of the Old Alleynians' credentials.

In a game played in good spirits, with a fantastic set of home supporters who always provide a hearty welcome, the Old Alleynians' attack racked up 6 tries: 4 from rejuvenated winger Will Beasley, one from James Mair in continuance of his try-scoring form, and a further touch down from Max Rust. Josh Winduss' boot functioned, yet again, with pentateuchal regularity, knocking over 2 penalties and 5 conversions to keep the team well clear.

Generally, the team was able to generate quick ball and the back-line, marshalled at fly-half by the returning Dai Allen, made good use of this front-foot ball. A special mention should go to Theo Dan, an exciting young prospect from the Saracens Academy, who in running from the OAs 22, showed his flare and skill to beat one man with his feet, a second with his handling skills and finally to chip through for Will Beasley to touch down for his third try; we eagerly await his further exploits on the field this season. However, in defence, the team will be disappointed to have been caught out more than once.

The final verdict? This was a result that the Old Alleynians 1st XV can be proud of, although not satisfied with. Thus, the good news is that there is more to come from this side in almost every facet of the game.

The goal for the 1st XV is not to let this result disappear into the wilderness of single instances. Will Saturday be a welcome repeat of this performance? We hope to see you in support at home against Old Cranleighians to find out.
